LINCOLN, Neb. – The UAB bowling team put together one of its best performances of the week on Friday morning but could not overcome a pesky St. Ambrose squad as the Blazers fell to the Bees, 4-2, and was knocked out of competition at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship.
The Blazers were able to put together four 200+ rounds against two of the strongest teams in the field, including facing off with the NCAA runner-ups in McKendree in the opening round of match play on Thursday.
"I could not be prouder of the way the girls competed this week," head coach Michelle Crews said. "We got paired with two very strong teams in our two rounds, but I thought the girls were up for the challenge in both. I think it was an outstanding tournament and it will prepare us moving into the future."
After St. Ambrose struck first with a 214-203 win in the first game, the Blazers stormed back and dominated Game 2, winning 217-188 to knot the match up at one game apiece. The 217 pins dropped were the second-most by the Green and Gold in the tournament.
UAB was able to squeak out a win in the next game with a 197-193 victory to go ahead 2-1. The Blazers then came within one pin of taking a 3-1 lead, but St. Ambrose was able to hold steady and claim a 190-189 win to tie the match up at 2-2.
Game 5 proved to be another extremely nerve-wracking match as the two squads were neck-and-neck all the way to the final frame before the Bees narrowly inched ahead and claimed a 204-202 victory to put themselves in a prime position to take the match.
UAB gave its all in Game 6 but was unable to knock down the pins it needed as St. Ambrose took the final game, 193-180, and claim the 4-2 match victory.
The Green and Gold will be able to use this experience heading into the future as the team returns all 11 players from this season's squad, while adding three talented freshmen to its lineup.
