LINCOLN, Neb. – Riding the momentum of the best season in program history, the UAB women's bowling team embarks into the unknown on Thursday as it opens competition at its first-ever USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship at Sun Valley Lanes.
Action will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday with 24 Baker games before Round 1 of bracket play begins at 4 p.m.
"We are so excited to be competing at our first-ever USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship," head coach Michelle Crews said. "What the girls have been able to accomplish this season has been nothing short of amazing and I am excited to see what they are able to do this week against some quality competition. I know they are ready to get going tomorrow."
UAB posted a 60-41 (.594) overall record this season through eight events, including five top-10 finishes. The Blazers best finish came at the Hornet Classic on Nov. 17-19, when the Green and Gold went 10-1 at the event to claim the team title.
The Blazers finished the season ranked 16th in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll.
A trio of bowlers who posted a 190+ average over the course of the season led the way for UAB, paced by NTCA Honorable Mention All-American Taylor Russell, who leads the team with a 208.38 average in 40 matches played.
Russell's best finish of the year came at the Hornet Classic, where she claimed the individual crown after recording a 37-pin victory over Justine Brookover of Lincoln Memorial en route to also being named to the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore Caitlin Cunningham ranks second on the team with a 192.55 average in 31 matches, while Rachel Strogin's 191.40 average in 35 matches is good for the third best on the team. The pair each has a top-10 individual finish under the belts this season.
The entirety of the team championship can be viewed via a livestream, which is available on the USBC website. A UAB-specific livestream will also be available on the UAB bowling Facebook page.
