DALLAS – The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), in conjunction with the Allstate Sugar Bowl, has named UAB football coach Bill Clark a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award for a second consecutive season.
Clark is one of eight finalists for the award, which also includes Josh Heupel (UCF), Brian Kelly (Notre Dame), Jeff Monken (Army), Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma), Nick Saban (Alabama), Dabo Swinney (Clemson) and Jeff Tedford (Fresno State).
The winner of the award will be announced on December 13 and the official presentation will take place on January 5, 2019 in San Jose, California hosted by the All State Sugar Bowl in conjunction with the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Clark has become a regular on postseason awards lists for guiding UAB's remarkable efforts in its return to the playing field in 2017. Along with this finalist award, Clark is a semifinalist for the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year award and the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year award.
In 2018, the Blazers claimed their first-ever Conference USA Championship en route to setting the program record for overall (10) and C-USA wins (7). UAB landed a school record 14 players on C-USA postseason awards teams and is poised to set virtually every offensive and defensive school record.
The Blazers were perfect at home for a second-straight season and are 12-0 at Legion Field since 2017. In addition to its perfect record at home, UAB has nabbed 14 conference victories since the programs return, the most of any league school dating back to the start of the 2017 season.
UAB will play in the school's third bowl game on December 18 against Northern Illinois at the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl. UAB has been bowl eligible six times in program history and all three seasons under Clark's guidance.
In three seasons with the Blazers, Clark has compiled an overall record of 24-14 and is 35-18 as a Division I head coach.
The Eddie Robinson Award has been given yearly since 1957 to the nation's premier football coach. Eddie Robinson coached for 56 years at Grambling State University, amassing 408 victories over the span of a legendary career.
