Jamell Garcia-Williams Named to C-USA All-Academic Team

BIRMINGHAM – Senior Jamell Garcia-Williams has been named to the InTouch Credit Union C-USA All-Academic Team with a 3.29 GPA as an English major, the league office announced on Thursday.
The Las Vegas, Nev. native was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll last season and wants to pursue a career in screenwriting. This is the first time Garcia-Williams has been named to the conference all-academic team.
"Jamell is an outstanding young man who puts his best foot forward in every aspect of his life," head coach Bill Clark said. "This award is a culmination of how hard Jamell has worked on the field and in the classroom. We couldn't be happier to have him represent UAB on the C-USA All-Academic Team."
On the field, Garcia-Williams leads the Blazers in sacks with 8.5 and had a career high two sacks in UAB's win over Charlotte on Sept. 29. In the Blazers' shutout win over Rice on Oct. 13, he tallied a career high six tackles and has 40 total this season. His 14.5 tackles for loss ranks him first on the team, sixth in C-USA, and has resulted in a loss of 62 yards for UAB's opponents.
He has been an anchor for the Blazer defense which ranks in the top-10 in seven different statistical categories. UAB is eighth in total defense (287.2) and leads the nation in fourth down defense (.214), while ranking second in third down defense (.255), fourth in sacks per game (3.42), sixth in tackles for loss per game (8.1), seventh in passing yards allowed (166.3) and ninth in scoring defense (16.7).
UAB will play in its first-ever conference title game this Saturday, Dec. 1 against Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CST on the CBS Sports Network. Tickets are available for the title game by clicking here.
