BIRMINGHAM – After putting together the best individual performance of her UAB career, sophomore Samantha Johnson has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowler of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Johnson is the second Blazer to earn the award this season after Caitlin Cunningham became the program's first recipient of the weekly honor. It is the first league honor of Johnson's career.
"I am so proud of Samantha for earning this honor," head coach Michelle Crews said. "She bowled stellar this past weekend at the Hornet Classic. She's had some great moments in the past, but she has been pushing so hard these last few weeks. She has had great days here and there and to have it come together for an outstanding weekend is amazing. What a great way to end the first semester and end 2018 on the highest note."
The Apopka, Florida, native played a major role in UAB's success this past weekend, posting the second-best average of the tournament at 211.4 in traditional play. She topped the 200-pin mark three times, including a weekend high of 237, and was named to the All-Tournament Team for the first time in her career.
Her efforts, along with top-10 performances from Annie Hurley (3rd), Caitlin Cunningham (4th), Rachel Strogin (9th) and Taylor Russell (10th), helped the team win its second consecutive Hornet Classic title and close out the fall portion of the season with a 34-15 overall record and top-10 finishes in all four of its tournaments.
The Blazers return to the lanes on January 11 when they travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to compete in the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
