BIRMINGHAM - Led by four seniors who have started every game this year, the UAB offensive line earned honorable mention by the Joe Moore Award, annually presented to the nation's top OL unit.
The Blazers were one of five teams to earn honorable mention along with Appalachian State, Army, Kentucky and Utah State, while 10 teams were named semifinalists for the honor: Alabama, Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia, Memphis, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Pitt, Washington State and Wisconsin.
UAB's line is led by four seniors in left tackle James Davis, left guard Rishard Cook, right guard Malique Johnson and right tackle Justice Powers. All four have started every game this year, while Davis and Powers have started all 24 games of their careers.
The unit has also featured three different starters at center as junior Lee Dufour started the first seven games before suffering an arm injury, along with Greg Fecanin (3) and Andrew Smith Jr. (1) who have combined to start the last four contests.
The Blazers rank second in Conference USA and 21st nationally in rushing yards per game (226.5) and have scored a school record 30 rushing touchdowns. Of those 30 rushing touchdowns, 15 have come from sophomore Spencer Brown who is seven yards shy of his second-consecutive 1,000-yard season. His 15 touchdowns are a single season record.
Along with being great in the run game, UAB is 20th nationally in sacks allowed per game and have only surrendered 14 all season.
UAB concludes the regular season this Saturday at Middle Tennessee. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN3. A win would secure home field advantage for the Conference USA Championship Game on Dec. 1.
