BIRMINGHAM - For leading the Blazers to their first team title since 2015 and winning his first individual collegiate crown, junior William Walker III has been named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana Tech.
Walker III paced the Blazers to a team score of -20 and won the title by holding off No. 10 Georgia who finished second at -18. It was UAB's first team tournament win since the Shoal Creek Invitational on Sept. 26, 2015.
The Tuscaloosa native also won his first individual title by shooting -9. Walker III carded a five-under 67 in the opening round of the tournament and followed that up with a four-under 68 in the second round. Walker III defeated the nation's second-ranked golfer in Georgia's Trent Phillips by one stroke and birdied two of his final three holes to capture the title.
"William had an awesome week," said head coach Mike Wilson. "Not only did he have a great week as an individual, but he played a crucial role for the team as he birdied two of this last three holes. His performance for 36 holes ranks right up there in school history and beating one of the top players in the country head-to-head was very impressive."
This is Walker's first C-USA recognition of the year and the second of his career.
The Blazers, ranked No. 74 in the latest golfstat.com rankings, have one tournament remaining this fall at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii.
