BIRMINGHAM – Senior wide receiver Xavier Ubosi has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for his breakout performance at Rice, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Ubosi was a monster in UAB's dominant 42-0 victory over the Owls, hauling in four catches for a career-best 196 yards and two touchdowns. His 196 receiving yards were the fifth most in program history for a single game.
The Reseda, Calif., native also etched his name into the record book in the second quarter when he caught a 95-yard touchdown pass, which tied for the longest scoring play in school history.
With UAB facing a third-and-five from its own 5-yard line, quarterback A.J. Erdely launched a go-route to Ubosi, who leaped over the Rice defender and took it to the house.
The 95-yard touchdown reception tied two other UAB quarterback-wide receiver duos for the longest scoring play: Darrell Hackney to Roddy White in 2004 and John Whitcomb to Derrick Ingram in 1994.
UAB's deep-play threat, Ubosi now has 10 catches for 335 yards and three touchdowns this season, while averaging 33.5 yards per catch. This is Ubosi's first career C-USA honor and he is the first Blazer to be honored by the league this season.
Tyler King of Marshall was also named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Juwan Foggie of Charlotte is the Defensive Player of the Week and Jose Borregales of FIU the Special Teams Player of the Week.
The first-place Blazers (5-1, 3-0 C-USA) host North Texas (6-1, 2-1 C-USA) this Saturday in a blockbuster showdown at Legion Field. Kickoff on beIN is set for 6:30 p.m.
