Blazer Invite 2018 Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB track and field team opened up 2018 with its second meet of the indoor season by hosting the Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Marielle Lewis shined for the Blazers in the 1000-meter run posting a time of 2:59.74 in her first time in the event, just shy of the UAB school record of 2:59.68 set by Lucy Taylor in 2010. Karri Green turned in a strong 500-meter run finishing fourth with a time 1:18.12.

UAB Highlights:

Serena Martinez scored a personal best in the 1000-meters with a time of 3:01.01 and claimed a top 10 finish.
Keila Robertson finished ninth in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.39 meters (17-08.25).
UAB had a good showing in the Distance Medley Relay running 12:43.81, placing second in the event.
Freshman Taylor Jones placed 25th in the women's 300-meter dash, turning in a time of 41.23.
Jenna Hinds led the Blazers in the mile turning in a 5:35.06 time, finishing 25th.

Track Side with Head Coach Kurt Thomas:
"We are definitely working out some kinks today, I saw a lot of great effort out of everyone which is what you want but we have some technical things to work out," Thomas said. "Coming back for the first meet since the Christmas break you'll see some of that but we'll get it cleaned up. Marielle and Serena ran very well in the 1000 meter and Marielle almost snagged our school record.

"Karri ran well in the 500 and Keila Robertson long jumped well. We have another opportunity tomorrow to get some competitions in and get better."
