Putting William Walker’s Shoal Creek Course Record in Perspective

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In Shoal Creek's 40 years of existence, it has seen some of the world's top golfers come through and has hosted numerous prestigious events, including the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship.
But it's not 1984 PGA Champion Lee Trevino or 1990 Champion Wayne Grady who can claim the course record. It now belongs to UAB sophomore William Walker.
Serving as tournament hosts this past Monday and Tuesday at Shoal Creek, the Blazers welcomed 11 teams for 54 holes on one of the country's most renowned courses.
Teeing off the first hole with the defending national champion Braden Thornberry of Ole Miss and Paul McBride of Wake Forest, both of which are ranked inside the world's top 20 for armatures, Walker made it known he is one of college's top golfers as well.
On the par 72, Walker shot a course record 64 (-8). His round consisted of 10 birdies and two bogeys. Yes, 10 birdies.
When asked what it felt like to make 10 birdies in a round, Walker responded with a grin on his face, "It's not normal to have 10 birdies in a round but it felt really good. The putter made all the puts so I can't do anything else but just thank my putter."
Walker finished the tournament at -7 overall and in a tie for third place, finishing only behind Thornberry (-9) and McBride (-8).
Walker ended his redshirt freshman campaign with momentum that has rolled over into the start of this season. In his first two tournaments, he has been under par in both, and has shot sub-par in four of his six rounds.
There is still a ton of golf left to be played, but Walker looks poised for a breakout season leading the Green and Gold. UAB returns to action Oct. 9-10 at a familiar course, playing in the Jerry Pate Invitational at Old Overton in Birmingham.
