BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's tennis team will open its 2017 fall slate this weekend as the team heads to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to compete in the Dale Short Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex.
The Blazers open competition on Friday against Austin Peay and square off with hosts Middle Tennessee on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend's festivities against Lipscomb. All three matches will begin at 9:30 a.m. CST.
"We are really looking forward to our first tournament of the fall season," head coach Derek Tarr said. "The guys are ready to get up to Murfreesboro and compete against some quality opponents. We are a young team, but we have some experience in seniors Anru Fourie and Stefan Gonzalez and the reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Year, Tim Dollman."
UAB is coming off of a 10-12 season which included a 2-4 record in C-USA. Over the course of the season, the Blazers combined for a 61-52 (.540) singles record and a 34-22 (.607) doubles record.
Dollman is coming off of a stellar freshman campaign, compiling a 10-5 overall record in singles play which included a perfect 3-0 conference record and a 6-2 record in the No. 1 position. He also competed in the No. 1 doubles position, earning eight wins with Gonzalez en route to being named C-USA Freshman of the Year and being named to the All-Conference First Team.
Similar to Dollman, Gonzalez also had a strong year in singles play as he recorded a 4-1 record in conference play to finish the season at 9-10 overall in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Fourie played a big role for the team in his first year with the Blazers, compiling a 5-7 singles record and a 5-3 doubles record with fellow South African Kenton Parton.
UAB returns all of its 2016-17 squad with the exception of Christian Coetzee and Eric Komati, who both graduated. The team makes one addition to its squad in freshman Brian Akhtar.
