BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A veteran offensive coordinator with a resume that includes OC duties at Alabama, Texas A&M and Mississippi State, Les Koenning oversees the Blazers' offense in 2017.
A native of San Antonio, Koenning began his coaching career at his alma mater of Texas in 1981 as a graduate assistant.
While working his way through the coaching ranks with stops at Duke, Houston, TCU and Miami Dolphins among others, Koenning's first appointment as Offensive Coordinator came from 2001-02 at the University of Alabama.
He then moved on to be the OC at Texas A&M from 2003-07 and oversaw the development of Reggie McNeal and Stephen McGee, two of the top quarterbacks in A&M history. Both finished their careers ranking in the top-5 for career passing yards, including McNeal who left as the all-time leader with 6,992 yards.
After one year at South Alabama in 2008 where he met Bill Clark, Koenning spent the next five years calling plays at Mississippi State.
Koenning helped set records at MSU including the 2013 season when the Bulldogs averaged 434.4 yards per game which was a then school record. He also coached the top four quarterbacks on the career completion percentage chart in MSU history in Tyson Lee, Tyler Russell, Dak Prescott and Chris Relf.
He spent the 2014 season back at his alma mater of Texas as wide receivers coach before joining the Blazers when he was officially named the Offensive Coordinator in January of 2016.
Despite a group that has not played many snaps in a UAB uniform, Koenning has high expectations for a talented offensive group that should be able to produce some big time numbers.
