BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In his second stint at UAB, Kyle Tatum leads the defensive line unit that boasts experience, size and speed.
After a very successful high school career at Prattville playing for Coach Bill Clark, Tatum attended the University of Alabama from 2002-06 where he played first on the defensive line before finishing career as an offensive lineman.
Tatum then got into coaching at his alma mater of Prattville from 2008-09 as an assistant coach for the offensive line.
Tatum joined the Blazers in 2010 as an assistant strength coach for one season before spending the next four years (2011-15) at Texas State.
Under the tutelage of then head coach Dennis Franchione, Tatum directed the tight ends in 2011-12, then transitioned to coaching defensive tackles for the next two years from 2013-15.
Tatum returned to UAB in the spring of 2016 as a strength coach, and was promoted to coaching the defensive line in the spring of 2017.
Tatum's defensive line group has high expectations, led by graduate transfer Teko Powell from Illinois. The tackle position is deep with Powell, Quindarius Thagard, Garrett Marino and Anthony Rush, while Stacy Keely, Darryl Waters and Roderick McKinney occupy the ends.
