BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A former Mr. Football winner under Bill Clark at Prattville in 2006, Larry Smith oversees the outside wide receivers which is a group shaping up to be a major asset for the Blazers this season.
Smith was a standout quarterback at Prattville and led the Lions to a perfect 15-0 record and state title in 2006. Smith threw for a school record 6,011 yards and 54 touchdowns in his career and was 39-2 as a starter.
He then attended Vanderbilt University from 2007-11 and started 27 games over his four-year career at quarterback.
Smith began his coaching career in 2013 as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State where he helped the Gamecocks go 11-4 and reach the FCS quarterfinals under Bill Clark.
He was then promoted to quarterback's coach in 2014 and worked with JSU's record-setting quarterback Eli Jenkins, and helped guide the Gamecocks to an appearance in the FCS national championship game in 2015.
Smith re-joined Clark in 2016 at UAB and has been working with the wide receiver's unit for a year and a half.
