Blazer Football spends the day constructing a house in Pleasant Grove
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Head Coach Bill Clark and over 40 members of the UAB Football team spent Friday constructing a five-bedroom house as part of Habitat for Humanity's 30th Anniversary build in Pleasant Grove, Ala.
The morning shift of players constructed walls in the basement of Getodia Smiley's house from 8-11:30 a.m. The second shift arrived at 12 p.m. and helped construct the flooring until 3 p.m.
"With a project like this, we get as much out of it as the family we help," Clark said. "This is one of those things that is bigger than us and we are extremely fortunate Habitat for Humanity let UAB Football be a part of such a monumental build."
The Smiley house is being constructed where the tornado of 2011 ripped through the greater part of Alabama and left thousands without homes.
For wide receiver and Athens, Ala., native Chase Long, this project was especially important to him.
"That tornado hit my neighborhood and I remember helping my friends reconstruct their houses, so being able to help build a house from the ground up is very special. We are family here at UAB, and helping another family find a home is very gratifying."
The entire project is anticipated to take six weeks.
