EL PASO, Texas - Junior Ali Meister of the UAB women's track & field team got the Conference USA Outdoor Championships started in strong fashion for the Blazers on Thursday. Meister obliterated her former personal-best in the Shot Put portion of the Heptathlon while moving into third on the school's outdoor performers list. She stands in fourth place in the hept after day one with 3,086 points.
"Ali had a great start to the championships," said UAB head coach Kurt Thomas. "Her hurdles were solid as always. She had a phenomenal shot put that is really going to help her in the long run and her 200m was very good. Sitting in fourth is good for her and sets her up for another big day. She knows what she needs to do to score big points. It'll be exciting to watch her tomorrow."
Meister's day started with her highest-placing performance of the day. She clocked a 14.21 time in the 100 Meter Hurdles, .02 off her personal-best. That was good for third place in the event.
The Spencer, Iowa, native went on to record a seasonal-best in the High Jump before her fifth-place mark in the Shot Put. Meister's best toss was 11.26 meters. That ranks only behind Zieandrea Bridges (13.46 meters) and Cadetic Walker (12.39 meters) as she becomes just the fifth athlete in UAB history to record a mark over 11 meters and the only one other than Bridges to do so since 2003. Meister's previous personal-best 10.41 meters recorded a month ago at the South Alabama Invitational.
Meister capped off the day with a seventh-place run in the 200 Meter Dash. Her time of 25.82 seconds was second-best in her flight and was narrowly off her career-best of 25.75.
The heptathlon comes to a close tomorrow with the Long Jump, Javelin Throw, and 800 Meter Run beginning later in the day at 4:30 p.m. (mountain time). Bridges will also be competing in the Hammer Throw starting at 10 a.m.
