AUBURN, Ala. – Staying in-state after competing across four different events in three separate states last weekend proved to be beneficial for the UAB women’s track & field team this weekend. The Blazers went down to Auburn for the Tiger Track Classic and registered a number of personal-bests and top ten performances.
“We made some great progress today Auburn,” said UAB head coach Kurt Thomas. “We had several top 10 finishes and plenty of personal-bests. Aisha Nelson jumped really well and was a highlight in the High Jump along with the 1500 Meter Run ladies. Rebecca Evans ran great in the 1500m and is setting herself up for some big things to come. Emily Drouin continues to run well and came away with another PR, as did Sarah Livett. Ali Meister picked up where she left off last week and is hurdling well. Marielle Lewis had a solid 400 hurdle race and is just off a big performance. We had some flat performances in other areas and need to all get on the same page when it comes time to perform. Overall, I like where this team is headed, but we can’t settle.”
Nelson’s performance in the High Jump netted her a third-place finish as she cleared 1.70 meters. That marks tied her PR from a season ago which is also the fifth-highest mark in school history. It is also tied for the third-best jump in Conference USA this season.
The 1,500 Meter Run for UAB featured a number of fast times. Rebecca Evans (4:32.82 – seventh), Emily Drouin (4:36.70 – 11th), and Sarah Livett (4:38.88 – 13th) all registered times that are top 15 in C-USA thus far in the spring. It was personal-bests for all three girls and they were joined by Celestial Moon (4:46.23 – 22nd) and Serena Martinez (4:47.47 – 24th) in the top 25 as those two also notched PR’s. Evans’ time was under four seconds shy of the top five performers list in school history.
Meister finished in seventh in the 100 Meter Hurdles with a time of 14.27 seconds. That is the fastest mark in her career in the event and the eighth-fastest in the conference.
Shelbi White, Lewis, and Jimmeshia Wilder also each ran new personal-bests. White’s performance came in the 200 Meter Dash where she clocked 24.77 seconds and finished 11th while Lewis (1:02.08 – 4th) and Wilder (1:04.76 – 11th) runs came in the 400 Meter Hurdles. All three of those marks also rank in the top 20 across C-USA in their respective races.
Next weekend, the Blazers are set to compete at the South Alabama Invitational. That event will take place across Friday and Saturday of Easter Weekend in Mobile, Ala.
