BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB beach volleyball team travels to Clarkesville, Tenn., this weekend to participate in the Governors Beach Challenge hosted by Austin Peay.
The Blazers (6-13, 0-6 CCSA) are coming off a weekend in which they went 2-2 in Atlanta and almost pulled an upset over No. 10 Georgia State. UAB took GSU to three sets in four of five matches, but ultimately fell 4-1 to its conference foe.
This is the second-to-last tournament for the Blazers before heading to the CCSA Conference Tournament in Emerson, Ga., April 21-23. UAB will host its second tournament of the season next weekend (April 14-15) when it welcomes Lincoln Memorial, New Mexico and UT Martin to Blazer Beach.
Emily Martinez and Kenley Adams have won five of their last six matches together and are 6-4 overall as a duo this season. The tandem's recent success has come on court three, and they are most recently coming off a three-set victory over No. 10 Georgia State.
Martinez has a team-high 10 individual wins this season, while Adams is tied for second on the team with eight.
UAB opens this weekend's tournament with Morehead State at 12 p.m. CST on Saturday, and then plays Austin Peay that afternoon at 4 p.m. CST. Sunday features matches with ULM (12 p.m. CST) and Austin Peay (4 p.m. CST).
This will be the first-ever match between UAB and Morehead State, while UAB and Austin Peay meet for the third and fourth time this season with the Blazers winning the first two. UAB also defeated ULM earlier this season and leads the all-time series 4-3.
