MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The No. 7-ranked UAB men's tennis team heads to the 2017 Conference USA Championships on Friday to face No. 2 Old Dominion in the quarterfinals. The Blazers and Monarchs face off in the opening match of the league tournament, scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Adams Tennis Complex.
This season, UAB is led by senior Eric Komati's 12 wins, followed closely by freshman Tim Dollman's 10-win season. Komati represents UAB primarily on court two, while Dollman is the top-seeded Blazer on court one. UAB is 60-48 (.556) in singles play this spring.
In doubles, Dollman and Stefan Gonzalez's 8-6 mark leads UAB. The duo is undefeated on court two, but primarily plays on court one, where they have five wins.
Senior Christian Coetzee has been battling injury, which has shaken up the lineup to end the season. Coetzee and Komati were 7-4 this season in doubles play, dominating on court two.
Last year, the Blazers made it to the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament after defeated Southern Miss. The Green and Gold fell in the semifinals to eventual champion, Rice, 4-1. The Blazers' semifinals appearance is the first time UAB has reached the semis since 2012 - and their highest finish since 2000 when UAB fell to Louisville, 4-3, in the finals.
UAB and ODU last met in 2016, when the Monarchs defeated the Blazers 4-2 on April 2.
