BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team held its 11th practice of the spring on Saturday morning at Legion Field and played its final intrasquad scrimmage before next weekend's Spring Game.
OBSERVATIONS:
- The defense came out on top in today's scrimmage and had high energy the entire day. They tallied four interceptions, one each from Chris Woolbright, Jordan Petty, Broderick Thomas and Chigozie Onyekwere.
- The offense had its moments, including an outstanding diving one-handed touchdown catch from Collin Lisa in the beginning of the scrimmage.
- The physicality continues to be on display and there were some good cleans hits today, but the players understand that the health of the team is most important.
COACH CLARK QUOTES:
On today's scrimmage:
"This was a good day for us. We got to use our headsets today. There is a ton of communication going on from the field to the pressbox, personnel, whose coming in, whose coming out. The players came out with a good mindset today and I think they defense probably came out ahead today."
On spring practice mentality:
"For us we try to make every practice like a game. That is always the goal. The difference for us is that we don't tackle to the ground, but today was just the second time we did that. That is really the only thing that separates it."
On the upcoming Spring Game:
"We've got things leading up the game which makes it exciting. We have the former players golf tournament. We have UAB Football stickers going up all over town. It is a concerted effort, the most I've seen since I've been here. We've got the facility and the foundation. I think it is just going to be a really fun day. We've got a flag football game after the Spring Game with our former players, which we have been doing, but it just has a different feel to it this year."
DEFENSIVE BACK Jordan Petty QUOTES:
On today's scrimmage:
"We gave great effort today. The entire defense. A1's, A2's, B's, we all came out hitting and we knew it would be a great challenge for us. I feel like we won and we gave it all we have."
On the defense this spring
"We have cleared a lot of things up. We have learned a lot of new plays and this is the time to go full speed. We ran what we knew today and we were successful."
On being close to September 2:
"From being a player who has done it before, I feel like we are really close to fall camp. It is right around the corner. It is definitely the real feel that the return is near. Next weekend is going to be electric. All the fans who aren't at practice, this is going to be for them. Also having our alumni back is going to be great."
The Blazers continue practice this coming Tuesday at the UAB Football Facility. The Spring Game will take place next Saturday, April 1 at Legion Field.
