BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB beach volleyball team is set to participate in the Tiger Beach Challenge this weekend, March 18-19, hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
The Blazers will play five matches this weekend, three of which are against CCSA conference foes in FIU, Tulane and No. 10 South Carolina. UAB opens the tournament with two nonconference matches against North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast.
UAB looks to rebound after an 0-3 showing at the Gamecock Challenge in Columbia, S.C. Despite the losses, Gabbi Moreno and Rachel Evans were able to win two of their three contests on court four.
Moreno/Evans are off to a tremendous start together as the duo owns a team-best 6-2 record. One of their two wins at South Carolina came over No. 11 Grand Canyon.
In the process, Moreno notched her 30th career win, and she is now just five away from cracking the top-5 on UAB’s career wins list. She and Evans also have their eyes set on breaking Moreno’s single-season wins record of 17 which she and Emily Martinez set last season.
The Blazers will be tested this weekend as South Carolina checks in at No. 10 in the AVCA national rankings with an undefeated 7-0 record, while both FIU and Tulane are receiving votes. UAB looks to avenge a loss to Tulane from earlier in the season, while this weekend’s match with South Carolina was supposed to be a rematch from last weekend but the match was cancelled due to snow in Columbia.
