BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s track and field team participated in the Samford Invitational all day Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Blazers had a number of strong performances in the 3,000 Meter Run.
“We made some good improvements today in a lot of events," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "The 3K girls really stepped up and put them in position to score at CUSA’s next week. Emily and Bex (Rebecca Evans) ran really well. Cele had a big breakthrough that she’s been on track for for a while in the 800m. Aisha has found a good jumping rhythm again and hopefully can keep it going next week as well. We are just off in a few other events, and really need to take care of ourselves and dig deeper this last week before our championship meet.”
Rebecca Evans paced the way for the Green & Gold in the 3,000. Her time of 9:53.77 was a new career-best and good enough for third on the day. Emily Drouin (9:59.01), Sarah Livett (10:00.72), and Hannah Coffin (10:06.85) took the seventh through ninth spots, respectively, with Drouin’s time being a new personal-record.
Celestial Moon performed well in the 800 Meter Run, notching a PR. The freshman finished in 2:14.86 and placed in ninth.
Melaney Frierson ran a season-best in the 60 Meter Dash while barely missing out on the finals. She crossed the line in 7.80 seconds, the 10th-fastest time of the day.
Aisha Nelson added a top five finish in the High Jump by clearing 1.67 meters to finish fourth.
The Conference USA Indoor Championships come to Birmingham next weekend. UAB hosts the event next Saturday and Sunday back at the CrossPlex.
