IRVING, Texas – Led by First Team All-Conference USA honoree Darious Williams, the UAB football team had 11 players earn all-conference accolades, the league office announced on Tuesday.
"To have 11 players recognized by the league's coaches is a testament to their hard work and dedication of wanting to be a part of college football history," head coach Bill Clark said. "These young men have gone through so much to get to this point and I couldn't be more proud of how they've represented this program, university and city."
Williams established himself as one of the top shutdown cornerbacks in the country this season en route to his first team selection. The Jacksonville native is currently tied for second nationally in passes defended with 20 (1.7/game). He led C-USA in pass breakups (15) and interceptions (five) this season and had a career-high four PBU at Florida.
Earning Second Team All-Conference USA honors are a pair of offensive players in freshman running back Spencer Brown and senior offensive lineman Chris Schleuger.
Brown, who also earned a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team, re-wrote the UAB record books in his rookie campaign. He rushed for 1,292 yards with 10 TDs and is currently the nation's third leading rusher among freshmen, averaging 107.7 yards per game.
Brown had six 100-yard rushing games in the regular season and is 97 yards away from the C-USA freshman rushing record which is held by Damion Fletcher of Southern Miss who had 1,388 yards in 2006.
Paving the path for Brown was Schleuger who anchored the offensive line unit. The Iowa native started nine games at left guard and two at right guard while grading out to a team-high 85 percent with 30 knockdown blocks.
The Blazers averaged 190.2 rushing yards per game which ranked them second in C-USA. UAB's 27 rushing touchdowns are tied for the single-season program record and its 2,822 collective rushing yards are the fourth most in school history.
UAB had an additional eight players earn C-USA Honorable Mention, led by quarterback A.J. Erdely and linebackers Tevin Crews and Shaq Jones.
Erdely accounted for 29 total touchdowns and tied a school record with 13 rushing touchdowns. Crews led the team in total tackles with 95 and was the only player in Conference USA to rank in the top 10 in both tackles and tackles for loss. He and Jones shared a team high 12.0 TFL.
Joining those three with honorable mention recognition are James Davis and Andre Wilson on offense, and Garrett Marino, Teko Powell and Broderick Thomas on defense.
The Blazers (8-4) are headed to the Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 22 at Thomas A. Robinson Memorial Stadium to play Ohio University (8-4). Kick is set for 11:30 a.m. CST on ESPN. Click here to purchase tickets.
