PHILADELPHIA - UAB head football coach Bill Clark has been named a semifinalist for the 2017 George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Thursday.
Clark is one of 16 semifinalists for the award. Semifinalist voting for the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year award will begin on Friday, Nov. 17 and close on Monday, Dec. 11. The finalist round will include the top three coaches as selected in the semifinalist round. Finalist voting will open Dec. 12 and run until Dec. 26. The winner will be announced Dec. 27.
The formal presentation of the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club's National Awards Gala on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Eligible voters include Maxwell Football Club members, NCAA Head Football Coaches, Sports Information Directors and selected national media. Nick Saban of the University of Alabama was the 2016 winner of the award.
"Bill Clark has done a tremendous job rebuilding our roster and it's remarkable that he has our program bowl eligible in our first year back," said Director of Athletics Mark Ingram. "Great coaches see improvement from their teams each week throughout the season and that is exactly what Bill has done. I couldn't be more proud of him, our staff and our team. He is more than deserving of this recognition and we all look forward to watching the continued success of UAB football under his leadership for years to come."
Clark has guided the Blazers to a current record of 7-3 overall and 5-2 in C-USA play. Both the overall wins and C-USA wins have matched a program record and UAB looks to set the new record this weekend at Florida and next weekend at home vs. UTEP.
The Blazers are bowl eligible for just the fifth time in program history and are on their way to playing in just the second bowl game in program history. UAB was picked to finish last in the C-USA preseason poll and was ranked 130th heading into the season.
UAB travels to take on the Florida Gators this Saturday in Gainesville. Kick is set for 4 p.m. EST/3 p.m. CST on the SEC Network.
