BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following his game-saving field goal block to help seal UAB's 23-22 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday, redshirt junior Stacy Keely has been named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
It is Keely's first conference award of his career while he is the first Blazer to garner the accolade since J.J. Nelson was named C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 10, 2014.
The Omaha, Nebraska native's heroics could not have come at better time for the Blazers as Louisiana Tech received the ball with 2:08 remaining in the game and took it 43-yards in five plays to set up a 30-yard field goal attempt with three seconds remaining.
UAB called two timeouts to ice kicker Jonathan Barnes before Keely was able to get up and block the 30-yard try and made the ensuing tackle on the boundary when the ball landed back in Barnes' hands.
The victory over Louisiana Tech was the first in program history and the block was the first for the Green and Gold since Nov. 1, 2014 against Florida Atlantic.
Keely's spectacular game-winning play garnered national attention, being featured on SportsCenter and College Football Final later that evening.
The Blazers close out their two-game home stand on Saturday against Middle Tennessee with kickoff slated for 5:30 p.m. Fans can watch the game on the beIN network.
