BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 2018 UAB beach volleyball schedule features 20 regular season matches, highlighted by the Blazer Beach Duals March 16-17 on the UAB beach volleyball courts.
"The schedule is filled with some of the top teams in the nation and we are excited to compete against the best," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "Our team has been working hard in preparation and we eagerly await the challenge that our opponents will present."
The season opens March 2-3 with a trip to Louisiana as the Blazers participate in an event hosted by The University of New Orleans. Jacksonville State, Spring Hill, Austin Peay and Houston Baptist round out the field.
The Blazer Beach Duals will take place two weeks later as UAB welcomes Tulane, Austin Peay and Louisiana Monroe. UAB had success in this tournament a season ago, falling only to No. 15 Tulane while amassing a 4-0 record against the remaining competition.
The loaded March schedule continues the following weekend as the Blazers trek to Columbia, S.C. for the Gamecock Challenge March 23-25. Host South Carolina, UAB, Hawaii, UNC Wilmington and Florida Gulf Coast will all take part in the event.
The final March competition has the Blazers heading back to Louisiana for the LSU Beach Invitational to challenge a couple of national powers – LSU and Arizona - in addition to in-state foe Jacksonville State. The Tigers and Wildcats both finished the 2017 season ranked in the top-10.
The regular season culminates in April as another strong national contender, FSU, welcomes UAB, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, TCU and UNC Wilmington to Tallahassee April 6-7.
The third annual CCSA conference tournament will be held April 20-22 in Emerson, Ga. UAB is looking to build off of last season's showing after earning the first CCSA tournament win in program history.
For the third consecutive season, the Blazers will host the National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.
"The chance to host the National Championship again is a unique selling point we have to offer and we plan on capitalizing on the opportunity by competing at a championship level," Iannone added.
