BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s track and field team wrapped up its weekend at the Birmingham CrossPlex with the Vulcan Invite on Saturday. The Blazers welcomed 24 teams today after having 16 teams compete in the UAB Blazer Invite yesterday.
"Our team came back after a hard day of competing and raced, jumped and threw hard again," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "The C-USA Championships are like that. This prepared us for that. We all saw as coaches and athletes what we need to improve on. We'll all do that and keep getting better.
The Blazers saw success right out of the gate. Hannah Coffin raced to victory in the One Mile Run with a personal-record time of 5:03.04. She narrowly edged out Kaitlyn Mooney, an unattached runner, as the two traded the lead throughout the race. Mooney led going into the final lap but Coffin beat her across the line by just .17 seconds. Sarah Livett (5:10.60) and Jenna Hinds (5:14.84) each added top 10 performances, finishing in seventh and ninth, respectively.
Aisha Nelson nabbed second place in the High Jump. The sophomore cleared 1.64 meters (5’4½”) on her first attempt. Erica Edwards of Jacksonville State took first place after jumping 1.69 meters (5’6½”) on her final attempt.
Keila Robertson earned a fifth-place finish in the Triple Jump. The freshman reached 11.56 meters on her best effort, just .01 shy of her performance at the BSC Icebreaker in the same complex in December.
UAB returns to action next weekend when they visit Nashville, Tenn., for the Vanderbilt Invitational. That is scheduled to take place January 20-21.
