BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women’s track and field team saw a number of record book worthy performances on Friday. The Blazers hosted the UAB Blazer Invite at the Birmingham CrossPlex and saw two freshman school records eclipsed.
"We as a staff we're very pleased with what our ladies did today," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "Everyone came out and competed very hard. We saw some progress from the Fall and I think set ourselves up to makes some big improvements over the next few weeks of competing and training."
Freshmen Serena Martinez dazzled on the track for the first time in the Green & Gold under Thomas. Martinez set a new freshman record in the 1,000 Meter Run (3:00.88), topping the previous mark held by teammate Hannah Coffin (3:01.50). The Hackensack, N.J., native finished third in the event and her run places her third all-time in the UAB record books.
Marielle Lewis added a freshman record as well. The first-year competitor finished the 600 Meter Run in 1:38.43, also good for the fourth-fastest mark in school history. She finished 11th in the event.
Shelbi White was the highest-placing Blazer of the day. The junior claimed second-place in the 60 Meter Dash with a time of 7.58 seconds after finishing in 7.62 seconds in the preliminaries. White would later add a sixth-place finish in the 300 Meter Dash (39.87), running the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Freshman Jenna Hinds added an eighth place performance in the One Mile Run with a time of 5:13.77, posting a personal-best.
Aisha Nelson added a top-five performance in the High Jump. She cleared 1.64 meters, tied for the fourth-best mark today.
"Serena and Marielle ran very well in the 1k and 600m," commented Thomas. "I couldn't be happier for Lauren Capone to bounce back from bad injuries and run well today. Jenna continues to get better and will help us out big time as the year goes on. Shelbi came back and picked up where she left off in the sprints. Karri Green and Kandiss competed well. Keila and Jennifer jumped well today too. Everyone is coming back tomorrow to compete, so we still have work to do. If we keep it up, we'll have gained a lot of good things from this weekend."
The Blazers will be back at the CrossPlex tomorrow morning to host the UAB Vulcan Invite. That event will begin at 8:00 a.m. and is once again free to the public.
