BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB cross country opens its 2016 season on Saturday when the Blazers travel to Memphis, Tenn., to run in the Memphis Twilight. The meet, hosted by Christian Brothers University, is set for 9:20 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
UAB is set to compete against 28 teams, including Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Memphis and conference foe Middle Tennessee.
“It’s exciting to finally brush the dust off the spikes and get racing this weekend,” head coach Matt Esche said. “Our expectations as a team are higher than they have been in years past, which makes this opener even more important to get a solid race under our belt right away.”
The Blazers, who return five letterwinners, welcome eight freshmen. Among the five returners are Hannah Coffin, Rebecca Evans, Sarah Livett, Laurie Pray and Victoria Roughsedge. Evans was UAB’s second-best finisher in all six meets in 2015, while Coffin placed third in all meets in the Blazers’ lineup.
The Green and Gold’s newcomers include Oklahoma transfer Chloe Peek, former UTC Moc Emily Drouin and six freshmen: Abigail Davis, Jenna Hinds, Marielle Lewis, Serena Martinez, Celestial Moon and Angela Moore.
In 2015, the Blazers opened their season at the Belmont Opener where Rebecca Evans placed 25th, helping UAB to a fifth-place finish.
