BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Returning to the UAB Football Facility after spending the majority of last week at Legion Field, the Blazers began week two of fall camp on Monday morning with positive results.
Head Coach Bill Clark Quote Sheet
On how practice is going in full gear:
“It’s going great. We try to practice like this any time we have just shells on, but you just have that little extra protection unless we do some live things. We always try and stay off the ground, but today we got around the goal line and were able to tackle to the ground a few plays. The full pads just helps from a protection stand point.”
On Collin Lisa:
“Collin is one of those guys that you can brag on because he is going to come to work every day. He’s a great kid, a great route runner, great hands guy. You will see him a lot on offense but also on special teams because we trust him a lot.”
On the process of getting Collin Lisa back to Birmingham:
“He reached out to us at mid-year about coming back and he ended up just staying where he was at. All those old guys that were younger guys and could come back really wanted to. It’s good to get him back.”
On Collin Lisa knowing how practice operates with so many new faces:
“That is very important to me because I think our practices are unique. Everybody is working at the same time, the intensity, the attention to detail. Anytime I get one of those old guys back they kind of tell the other guys and so that helps.”
On being short on numbers:
“We are, but we’ve got bodies. The reason I want to really brag on those walk-ons is because we have as many walk-ons as we do scholarship players. Those guys will have a chance to earn something or maybe get on special teams. But if you’re talking about really actual scholarship players, it’s going to be a whole recruiting cycle before we can get close to 85.”
On the offensive line:
“That is one of those groups. We have had guys that have been with us all the way back to the fall, that are more kind of depth guys, but some of those guys will have a chance. We also have some guys coming in the fall and some guys that we need to sign.”
On Chris Schleuger and Stephen Pickren:
“Schleuger we’re really excited about him. He has a lot of potential and was a great player before. Pickren is a guy that knows our system so getting him back is good. Obviously he is a little under sized but he’s a fighter and is going to work his tail off. He knows the system.”
Wide Receiver Collin Lisa
On how practice is going:
“It feel good. It feels real good to be back with my guys and we’ve been have a few real good practices.”
On how it’s different being back at UAB:
“Really there isn’t a whole lot that is different. It is kind of déjà vu because the practices are the exact same. The guys are different but we all have the same goals and mentality so there really isn’t a whole lot different to be honest.”
On being a leader:
“Even though I’m not that old I have a lot of game experience so I can help out leading some of the other receivers and some of the other guys on offense.”
On how it feels being back wearing the green and gold:
“It feels good. It feels like this is where I’m supposed to be and where I’m supposed to finish my career at, where I was supposed to come originally.”
On the decision process to leave Buffalo:
“It wasn’t an overnight decision. When I first heard it was coming back in June it popped in my mind but I was like it has to develop more. Then after my season I was thinking about it but decided to take more time and go up to Buffalo for the spring and see how spring went. But my heart is still here so I wanted to be back in Birmingham.”
On the turning point in the decision making process:
“When I started seeing the really good players we were getting. The DBs and other good receivers and the quarterbacks. I knew having this year off to redshirt and go against the really good DBs that we have it would make my game that much better and I could make their game better. And then seeing the guys, the guys that I could play with, and then obviously Coach Clark.”
On his role on the team:
“I can do a lot. I can run in the slot with miss-matches on linebackers, I can get down the field on corners, post on the inside, I can really run outside, they have me holding kicks now, and we’re running trick plays so I can throw the ball. Anything coach asks me to do I can do. I can also return punts.”
On being three hours away from home:
“It’s awesome. My little brother just started playing football so I have been able to go home. I will be able to go to his games and he will be able to come to all of mine. My dad was the only one who could come to my games in Buffalo.”
