BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former UAB golfer Paul Dunne has earned his way to the 145th British Open after winning the Woburn Qualifying Series in Little Brickhill, England, for a third-straight year.
Dunne captured the title by shooting a 135 (-9) for the two rounds and finished ahead of Ryan Evans (-8) and Robert Rock (-7). Both Evans and Rock also qualified for The Open as the top three in the field of 72 earned automatic berths.
“What an unbelievable achievement to win this tournament for a third year in a row,” head coach Alan Murray said. “The Open is arguably the biggest tournament in the world and for him to get back there after his historic performance last year as an amateur is great for him.”
This will be Dunne’s third-straight year competing at The Open, and his first as a professional. Last year as an amateur, Dunne led after three rounds, making him the first amateur since 1927 to lead The Open heading into Sunday.
And as he did last year at St. Andrews, Murray will caddy for Dunne this year at Royal Troon which is scheduled for July 14-17.
UAB will also be represented by Graeme McDowell at The Open as he looks to capture his second major title. McDowell won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. At last year’s Open, McDowell and Dunne played their practice round together.
