BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB beach volleyball head coach Bailey Coleman has announced the addition of four incoming players to join the Blazers for the start of the 2016-17 campaign.
Coleman has added two graduate transfers and two true freshmen to the roster. The additions include fifth-year players Kalah Jones and Katarina Jovicic, along with freshmen Brittney Munro and Morgan Smith.
"I am very excited to be adding such a great combination of experience and talent to the roster," Coleman said. "Our graduate transfers know what it takes to be successful at this level, and their leadership will only benefit the likes of Brittney and Morgan who we have such high hopes for."
Kalah Jones: Graduate Transfer/Fayetteville, Ga./VCU
Jones was a three-year standout on the hardcourt at VCU, earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors three straight years. As a senior, the outside hitter was second on the team with 356 kills and had a team-best 3.52 kills per set. She led VCU in kills as a junior with a career-high 393 spikes.
Katarina Jovicic: Graduate Transfer/Toronto, Ontario/Columbia
Like Jones, Jovicic was a standout on the hardcourt and played at Columbia for the past four years. As a senior, the Ontario native was a Second Team All-Ivy League selection and finished second on the team with 164 kills, while tallying the fifth most blocks in a single season with 107. She finished her career ranking third all-time in career total blocks with 285.
Brittney Munro: Freshman/Tomball, Texas/Rosehill Christian
As a hardcourt player for Rosehill Christian, Munro earned First Team All-District as a junior and a senior. She was a three-year starter and a captain as a senior, and also helped her basketball team reach the state championship game as their second leading scorer. In the classroom, Munro finished seventh in her class with a 3.9 GPA and was a three-time academic all-star in volleyball and two-time all-star in basketball. She was a member of the National Honor Society from 2014-16.
Morgan Smith: Freshman/Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East
Smith joins the Blazers as a true freshman with very impressive beach credentials. In 2016, Smith took third place in two highly competitive tournaments, including the Gulf Shores National Championship. In 2015, she won the Volley American Qualifier and USA Qualifier, as well as taking third at both the NVL Qualifier and Gulf Coast National Championships. Along with being a standout in the sand, Smith was a high honor roll student who finished high school with a 3.8 GPA and plans to major in neuroscience.
