Blazers Blank Tigers on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In his final home match, senior Mitchell Martell clinched a 4-0 victory for the UAB men’s tennis team over Jackson State on Thursday at the Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Center.
To open doubles action, Christian Coetzee and Kenton Parton swiftly took down the Tigers’ top-ranked tandem of Ryan Swanier and Styliouos Guontsaris, 6-1, to give the Blazers a 1-0 edge in doubles play.
On court two, Martell and Luiz Felipe Pinto wasted no time as they breezed to a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for UAB.
In singles play, Parton extended the Blazers’ lead to 2-0 with a methodical 6-0, 6-1 win on court three. Coetzee made quick work of JSU on court four with a 6-1, 6-2 win to give UAB a 3-0 advantage.
Martell put the match away as he earned his fourth win in the last five matches as the Blazers’ top-ranked singles player.
Both Pinto and Oliver Poysti finished in two sets, while Stepan Vancurik completed the come-from-behind win on court six to earn the sweep for UAB.
