BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s tennis team garnered a spot on the C-USA All-Academic Team thanks to junior Eric Komati, the league office announced Tuesday. The team is comprised of seven student athletes that excel, both on the court and in the classroom.
“Eric has been a great representative of our program since he got here,” head coach Derek Tarr said. “He exemplifies everything you could want in a player whether it be on the court or in the classroom.”
Komati, who holds a 3.5 GPA with a degree in finance, joins Jordi Massalle Ferrer (Charlotte), Alexander Gitin (Florida Atlantic), Dima Zyhmantovich (Middle Tennessee), Miguel Negre Fernandez (Middle Tennessee), Tommy Bennett (Rice) and Wen-Po Tseng (Southern Miss).
In his first year as a Blazer, Komati was named to the UAB Dean’s List in Fall ’15, earned a spot on the UAB Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, and was tabbed to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
On the court, Komati boasts an 11-3 record, primarily on court two for UAB, with two of his losses coming to ranked foes. He opened the spring 2016 campaign with an overall mark of 8-1.
In doubles action, Komati and teammate Stepan Vancurik lead the Blazes with 13 wins on court three. The duo has won seven of their last eight matches, with five of their doubles foes on ranked teams.
The Blazers hit the court on Friday for the C-USA Conference Tournament, hosted by Rice in Houston. UAB will faceoff against Southern Miss at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
