BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the first time this season, the UAB beach volleyball team plays in the friendly confines of the UAB Beach Courts as the Blazers host the Blazer Beach Duals this weekend.
The tournament begins Friday when UAB squares off against New Orleans at 1 p.m. CT.
Saturday's competition is "Fight Like Hal Dual Day" as fans are encouraged to wear lavender in support of UAB's first beach volleyball coach, Hal Messersmith, who passed away after a battle against cancer in 2013.
UAB competes in a doubleheader Saturday with matches against Louisiana Monroe at 1 p.m. CT and Lincoln Memorial at 4 p.m. CT.
The Blazers close the tournament Sunday with matches against Spring Hill at 10 a.m. CT and Jacksonville State at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Sunday is set for Senior Day as the Blazers will honor graduate students Sara Rishell, Michaela Reesor and Chelsi Carter in a special ceremony as they play their final home matches.
UAB enters the weekend with a 7-8 overall record after splitting four matches at the Gamecock Invitational last weekend. The Blazers' pair of Rishell and Carter went undefeated at the No. 1 position and improved their record to 8-5.
Sophomore Gabbi Moreno and freshman Emily Martinez continue impressive work at the No. 5 position and leads the team with an 11-4 record.
