UAB Downs Sun Belt Foe South Alabama

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The UAB men’s tennis team earned a 4-1 win over South Alabama in its final match of the MT Spring Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center on Saturday. In the tournament, the Blazers posted a 2-1 record, including a win over host No. 62 Middle Tennessee.
UAB breezed to an early 1-0 lead due to wins on courts one and three in doubles action. Eric Komati and Stepan Vancurik opened play with a convincing 6-0 win on court three for the Blazers. The tandem earned their sixth win in the last seven matches.
Christian Coetzee and Kenton Parton secured the UAB lead, 1-0, with a 6-1 win on court one over USA’s top duo, Gerhard Gruindelingh and Olivier Gingras.
Coetzee helped extend the Blazers’ lead to 2-0 with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win on court four; but USA responded with a tiebreak 6-4, 7-6 win on court two to cut the UAB lead to 2-1.
Luiz Felipe Pinto and Eric Komati won in come-from-behind fashion on courts six and three, respectively, to clinch a 4-1 victory for UAB.
