UAB Splits Saturday's Beach Volleyball Action

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UAB beach volleyball team split Saturday’s doubleheader at the Gamecock Challenge hosted by South Carolina in Columbia.
UAB (2-3) opened the day strong with an impressive 5-0 win over Coastal Carolina to open the South Carolina Duals. The Blazers’ No. 1 pair, Sara Rishell and Chelsi Carter, improved to 2-0 on the season with a 21-15, 21-12 victory over Natasa Savovic and Alilse Petersone. Carter notched her fourth individual win of the season to improve her record to a team-leading 4-0.
Michaela Ressor and Avery Hoven earned their first victory of the season after defeating Tahleia Bishop and Aleksandra Djuric at the No. 2 position, 21-18, 16-21, 15-10. The three-set battle was the lone match against Coastal Carolina (0-1) that went to a decisive third set.
Mercer (3-2) took down the Blazers, 4-1, in the final match of UAB’s doubleheader to lead the season series, 3-0. Rishell and Carter dropped their first match of the season as the duo fell to Emma Peel and Sophie Peel, 21-19, 21-18, at the No. 1 position.
The Blazers’ lone victory came at the No. 3 position as Buckland and Logoleo topped Ellie James and Madison Kerr, 23-21, 20-22, 15-6, to move to 3-0 on the season.
UAB closes the South Carolina Duals on Sunday with back-to-back matches against conference opponents South Carolina and Tulane for the Blazers’ first CCSA contests of the 2016 season. The Blazers take on the host Gamecocks at 10 a.m. CT before taking on the Green Wave at 2 p.m. CT.
