Blazers defeat Golden Eagles at the C-USA Showdown

HOUSTON – The UAB men’s tennis team (6-4) took down league foe Southern Miss (7-6) in the final match of the Conference USA Showdown on Sunday, hosted by Rice. The Blazers and Golden Eagles battled in singles play, where UAB used four wins to earn the victory.
Mitchell Martell gave UAB an edge on court one, as he defeated Tarun Surat, 6-3,6-4, to give UAB a 1-0 lead.
On court six, Stepan Vancurik extended the Blazers’ lead to 2-0, as he took down Rakshit Rishi 6-4, 6-1.
The Golden Eagles’ Wen-Po Tseng cut the lead to one as he battled Eric Komati, escaping with a 6-4, 6-4 decision on court two.
Oliver Poysti and Christian Coetzee put the match out of reach as they won on courts three and four, respectively. Poysti earned a 6-2, 7-5 win, while Coetzee earned a hard-fought three-set tiebreak win.
The Blazers welcome ETSU to Birmingham as they face the Buccaneers on Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m.
