UAB Wins Second-Straight Match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s tennis team won its second-straight match as it took down in-state foe North Alabama, 5-2, at George Ward Park.
The Blazers (2-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match as it swept the Lions earning victories on all three courts in doubles play.
The tandem of Luiz Felipe Pinto and Christian Cortezee and Eric Komati and Stepan Vancurik remained perfect on courts one and three as it decisively won, 6-3 and 6-2, to remain perfect at 2-0 this season. On court two, Mitchell Martell and Kenton Parton picked up their first win as a duo this spring with a 6-2 decision.
In singles play, North Alabama responded with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two over Coetzee to even the match at 1-all.
UAB responded on court three as Komati earned a 6-4, 6-0 decisive win to give it a 2-1 edge. This was Komati’s first appearance on court three this season, as he has represented the Blazers on court four in the other two matches this year with an unblemished 2-0 mark.
UAB extended its lead to 3-1 as Poysti recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five. North Alabama attempted to make a comeback as it chipped into the Blazers’ lead, 3-2, as it earned a win on court four.
Pinto earned the Blazer victory on court six at 4-2 as he defeated Taylor Aushborn in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-0).
UAB wrapped up the match as Martell earned a win on court one
The Blazers return to the courts on Feb. 7, as they host another in-state opponent, Jacksonville State.
