Men's Tennis Opens Fall Slate In Impressive Fashion

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ---- The UAB men’s tennis opened its fall season in impressive fashion here Saturday as the Blazers won 11 of 15 matches at the Southern Miss Invitational.
The Blazers claimed four of seven singles matches against host Southern Miss, took four of five in singles from South Alabama, and then swept three doubles matches from New Orleans.
Eric Komati made his UAB debut with a pair of wins in singles. The transfer from Fresno State downed the Golden Eagles’ Wen-Po Tseng, 6-4, 6-3, and then defeated the Jaguars’ Tuki Jacobs, 5-7, 6-2. 6-4.
Blazers’ sophomore Oliver Poysti also won both of singles matches, and also teamed in doubles with Stepan Vancurik for a victory. Poysti beat Southern Miss’ Rakshit Rishi, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, and also captured a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win over South Alabama’s Oliver Gingras.
Senior Luis Pinto was a winner over the Jags’ Lucas Gonzalez, 6-3, 7-5 while Mitchell Martell downed Daniel Merker, 6-4, 6-0. UAB freshman, also playing his first match for the Blazers, defeated the Golden Eagles’ doubles with Stepan Vancurik for a victory. Poysti beat Southern Miss’ Rishi, 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles, Pinto and Christian Coetzee were 6-3 winners over New Orleans’ Gonzalo Garcia and Nicolas Kramer. Martell and Trey McCombs teamed to beat Christoffer Applegren and GIacomo Adonceehi, 6-1. Poysti and Vancurik downed Luiz Albuquerque and Karim Shokeir, 6-4.
Play continues Sunday at the USM Tennis Courts as the Blazers meet UNO in singles play and take on Southern Miss and South Alabama in doubles action.
