BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Catherine Ragon, a rising junior on the UAB women's tennis team, has been selected to represent Conference USA on the NCAA's National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Each of the 31 Division I conferences selects one student-athlete to represent it on the committee. The members of the committee respond to proposed NCAA legislation, review and comment on governance matters and other subjects of interest, while keeping student-athletes across the conference informed.
Ragon served as the UAB SAAC President during the 2014-2015 campaign. This year she will serve her second term as the UAB SAAC President and as the Blazers C-USA SAAC representative in addition to her duties at the national level.
"I am so excited and honored to be named C-USA's representative for National SAAC," said Ragon. "I have no doubt that this will be an experience of a lifetime. I am looking forward to continuing our amazing progress with UAB SAAC, but also getting a chance to go beyond Birmingham into the conference and national level."
Ragon's term on the committee will begin immediately and continue through June 30, 2017. She is one of three women's tennis student-athletes on the committee.
"To see Catherine earn this opportunity is truly an exciting and proud moment for me and our student-athlete development staff," said Justin Mackey, Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. "Cat has bought in to our philosophy and plan since day one and she has elevated our programming, our campus SAAC, and all of her peers that serve along with her."
Catherine has been one of the most active Blazers in the community during her time at UAB. She helped lead UAB student-athletes to over 2,000 hours of service in the Birmingham community during the past academic year. Ragon spearheaded an effort for UAB student-athletes to wash wagons at Children's of Alabama multiple times per week. She also led a fundraising effort, which resulted in the Blazers donating three UAB Athletics themed wagons to the local hospital.
"This is such a great opportunity for both Catherine and UAB," said head women's tennis Coach Mark Tija. "We are thrilled that Cat will be the voice and the representative for Conference USA. They could not have selected a better student-athlete."
