RALEIGH, N.C. -- The UAB track and field team closed out the Raleigh Relays with a pair of top-10 finishes in relay events and Kendra Gipson set a new personal best in the triple jump on Saturday at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility.
"We had just a few events going today, but everyone performed well," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The three relays ran well in really cold weather. None of the times were impressive for the entire meet, but our girls raced hard and got some quality races."
UAB's only races on Saturday were relays, as the Blazers capped off the meet with top-10 finishes in two of the relays that they entered.
UAB's highest relay finish was in the 4x100, as the Blazers finished their first relay of the day in 47.24 to take sixth place in the top heat and eighth place overall. The Blazers followed by clocking a time of 1:42.18 in the 4x200-meter relay to post a 10th-place finish.
Rounding out the Blazers' performances in the relays was a 12th-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay, as they posted a time of 9:23.22 in their first foray in the event this outdoor season.
Kendra Gipson highlighted UAB's individual performers on Saturday, as she leapt a personal-best 12.18 meters (39-11 1/2 feet) to finish sixth in the triple jump. Gipson had set her previous best earlier in the 2015 outdoor season, as she jumped 12.11 meters (39-08 3/4 feet) at the Battle of I-65 at Samford.
"Kendra continues to have a good season," Thomas said. "She set a personal best and is jumping with confidence."
The UAB track and field team will be back in action on Friday, April 3, as the Blazers travel to Auburn, Ala. for the Auburn Invitational. Competition will last through Saturday, April 4.
