Sand Volleyball Tops New Orleans 5-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB sand volleyball team earned a 5-0 win over New Orleans but fell to LSU, 3-2, in its two matches of the Blazer Beach Duals Tournament on Saturday.
UAB (3-7) opened the day in a close match with LSU (8-7). The Blazers and Tigers were tied after the first two matches, but LSU picked up two more wins to take the match.
Senior Becca Howard and freshman Avei Logoleo picked up the first win of the day for UAB at the No. 5 position over Emily Ehrle and Emma Hiller, 21-19, 21-17. At the No. 1 position, seniors Bethanie Thomas and Kiriana Hirini topped Katie Lindelow and Mandi Orellana, 21-11, 19-21, 15-12.
The two pairs picked up their second wins of the day in UAB's 5-0 defeat of New Orleans (0-13). Thomas and Hirini earned a straight-set win over Cara Sander and Celeste Ramirez, 21-11, 21-11.
At the No. 2 spot, seniors Ally Slaughter and Leslie Ekpe had to come from behind down one set to take the win, 19-21, 21-11, 15-4. Seniors Sara Rishell and Rachel Fairbanks added a win for the Blazers at the No. 3 position, 21-2, 21-15.
Freshmen Anna-Mae Messisco and Gabbi Moreno won in three sets. The duo took the first set 21-13 before New Orleans tied it at 1-1 with a 21-19 win in the second set. UAB held on for the win 15-11 in the tie breaker.
Howard and Logoleo earned their second win of the day at the No. 5 spot, topping New Orleans 21-12, 21-11.
UAB will be back in action for the final day of the Blazer Beach Duals Tournament on Sunday. The Blazers will play Louisiana-Monroe at 10 a.m. and Spring Hill at 2 p.m.
