TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Autumnn Burnett's fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles highlighted three top-10 finishes for the UAB track and field team on day two of the Alabama Relays at Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
"We had a decent start to the Alabama Relays," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Autumnn ran a very good opening 400-meter hurdle race. It was good to open the season with that time, look for ways to improve and get faster. Lucy Crookes ran a nice 1,500. The 4x200-meter relay ran well - it's good development for those girls."
Burnett recorded the best finish of any Blazer on Friday, clocking a time of 1:01.61 in the first heat of the 400-meter hurdles to place fourth. The senior's finish tonight marks her second top-five finish for the 2015 outdoor season, as well as her third top-10 finish thus far for her outdoor campaign.
UAB's other individual top-10 finisher on Friday was Lucy Crookes, who finished the women's 1,500-meter run in 4:36.06 to finish third in the second heat and ninth overall in the event.
UAB's final top-10 finish was accounted for in the 4x200-meter relay, where the Blazers finished in a tie for seventh. The foursome of Darielle Oliver, Leila Elliott, Shelbi White and Fanta Diabate ran in the first of two heats, posting a time of 1:39.47.
Kendra Gipson rounded out UAB performers with finishes in multiple events, placing 12th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.73 meters (38 feet, six inches) and 15th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.64.
"We have lots of opportunities to race tomorrow," Thomas said. "This meet is great to keep building for the rest of the season."
