BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB track and field team will begin its 2015 outdoor campaign this Saturday with a trek across town for the Battle of I-65 at Samford University.
The meet will last all day Saturday, with the first field event starting at 11:30 a.m. CT. UAB will be competing in a field that includes Tiffin and in-state teams Samford, South Alabama and Alabama State.
"We're looking forward to kicking off the outdoor season close to home," UAB head coach Kurt Thomas said. "This meet is small and we'll be competing against a few in-state schools, including Samford, South Alabama and Alabama State. It's a great environment to look at some outdoor events like the 100 hurdles, 4x100m relay and the 400m hurdles. It also gives us a chance to get some extra work in some different events to help prepare for the rest of the outdoor season."
UAB is entering its most athletes in the mile run, as seven Blazers will run the event, including Hannah Coffin, Lucy Crookes, Rebecca Evans, Sarah Livett, Laurie Pray, Lauren Scott and Allison Wortel.
UAB will enter five field athletes in the javelin throw, including Khalia Jones, Ali Meister, Renay Ransaw, Jimmeshia Wilder and Shelby Barker, who won the bronze in the pentathlon at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships two weeks ago.
Barker, Meister and Ransaw will also run the 100m hurdles, along with Jessica Shelley and Autumnn Burnett. The 100-meter dash will also include five Blazer sprinters, as Kelli Smith, Fanta Diabate, and freshmen Leila Elliott, Khalia Jones and Shelbi White will compete in the event.
UAB's other third-place conference finisher, Jenna Wesley, will be among four Blazers running the women's 400-meter dash, joined by Kandiss Briggs, Burnett and Coffin.
"The bottom line is that it gives us a chance to compete," Thomas said. "That's what we're looking forward to, as well as the chance to see some people develop."
