Men's Tennis Blanks North Alabama In Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team evened its record at 1-1 in impressive fashion Tuesday as the Blazers blanked visiting North Alabama, 7-1, at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
UAB claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions and then swept through singles in closing out the shutout victory.
Mitchell Martell and Luiz Felipe Pinto were 6-4 winners at No. 1 over the Lions' duo of Guillhaume Dechoz/Brendon Millington-Herrmann while Christian Coetzee and Donovan McSeveney took a 6-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot over Max Druppel and Javier Cordero.
The Blazers won four of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Martell was stretched to three sets at No. 1 but prevailed over Dechoz, 7-5, 6-7 (2), 10-8. Pinto won the other three-setter for the Blazers, taking a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Druppel.
Meanwhile, McSeveney was a 7-6 (6), 6-1 victor at the No. 2 singles position over Millington-Herrmann, Coetzee won by a 6-2, 6-3 score at No. 3 over Cordero, Vancurik claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position over Taylor Ausbon, and Oliver Poysti cruised past UNA's Ali Murad at No. 6.
UAB will return to the courts on Friday when they play two matches against No. 38. The Blazers meet the Tigers at Auburn at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
