NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB bowling team earned its first national ranking in school history, as it was voted No. 16 in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll (NTCA) released on Wednesday.
"I am so excited because we didn't get more than two votes in the preseason poll and just 10 in December and now of the 26 coaches, 22 voted for us," head coach Michelle Crews said. "It is very rare that a team that is ranked for the first time goes as high as 16th so this is exciting for our girls. It gives us momentum into the second half of the year and we are certainly going to use that going to Houston this weekend."
UAB (43-24) has already eclipsed its highest win total for a year with 49 wins this season. The Blazers have recorded several wins over ranked teams and have finished in the top-11 of all three spring tournaments so far.
"I have been so pleased with the commitment and dedication the girls have shown since they came back in the spring semester," Crews remarked. "They have stayed committed to the program as far as goals, visions, and what we want to accomplish this season. Their work ethic has been amazing, I am so proud of them."
Most recently, UAB took third at the Wildcat Invitational finishing with a record of 6-7, which included a win over then No. 20 Tulane. Prior to that, the Blazers took 11th at the Kutztown Invitational, the largest tournament in the nation with 27 teams.
UAB also picked up an eighth-place finish at the Mid-Winter Invitational with four of its six wins coming over top-20 ranked teams. Individually, the Blazers have had a person finish in the top-11 in all three tournaments in the 2015 season.
Freshman Amy Quick took third at the Wildcat Invitational and 11th at the Mid-Winter Invitational. Fellow freshman Jessica Mellott picked up an 11th place finish to earn all-tournament honors at the Kutztown Invitational.
UAB has two remaining tournaments in the regular season. The Blazers will travel to Houston, Texas this weekend for the SFA Stormin' Jack Classic that runs Friday-Sunday.
