Team effort downs Mississippi College in exhibition
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ignited by 12 points from Chelsee Black, the UAB women's basketball team knocked off Mississippi College, 75-36, on Saturday afternoon in Bartow Arena.
UAB had a stagnant offensive start, taking a slim 15-11 lead into the second quarter. However, the Blazers continually got to the free throw line and converted the opportunities at the charity stripe, connecting on 77.3% of free throws.
The Blazers took a 36-24 advantage into halftime, but came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. Newcomer Keonna Farmer sparked the offense scoring the first eight points for UAB en route to a 17-2 advantage in the third quarter.
"She can score and she can rebound and we want her to be aggressive offensively," said head coach Randy Norton. "She can score in a lot of ways, she can face up and knock down that 17-foot shot, she can go down and post you up, and she can drive you to the rim."
Bianca Dufelmeier, Kayla Anderson, and Brittany Winborne added 10 points apiece as the Blazers pulled away in the second half, shooting 46.7% from the field compared to 13.6% from Mississippi College, holding the Choctaws to just 11 second half points.
"We came out the second half and our goal was to shut them down," said Norton. "And our shots started to fall, there are a lot of things to build off, a lot of positives."
The UAB fans were treated to many different lineups in today's exhibition matchup as every Blazer saw playing time.
UAB controlled the hustle stats today outscoring Mississippi College, 38-12, in the paint as well as scoring 26 points off turnovers from the Choctaws.
The Blazers will be back in action for the final exhibition matchup on Thursday as UAB takes on Miles College at 7 p.m in Bartow Arena.
