UAB Bowling Finishes 11th At Kutztown Invitational

READING, Pa. – Three-straight wins on the final day of competition moved the UAB bowling team into an 11th-place finish at the Kutztown Invitational. All three of the wins came over top-20 ranked teams.
UAB (43-25) finished 11-3 overall in the three-day tournament with a total pinfall of 15,100 to average 191.1 per game. The Blazers posted six wins over ranked teams in 14 matches.
To begin the final day, UAB was paired with No. 12 Sacred Heart University. The teams played a close match, as it was tied 2-2 heading into the fifth game. The Blazers picked up a 200-189 win to take a 3-2 advantage, but Sacred Heart won the sixth game to send it to a tiebreaking seventh game.
UAB secured the win, 236-228, to advance up in the bracket and face No. 14 St. Francis Brooklyn. In that match, the Blazers went ahead 2-0 but St. Francis Brooklyn battled back to win the next three games and lead, 3-2 heading into the sixth game.
The Blazers had to win the final two to continue to advance in the winners bracket. UAB picked up a 183-157 win to send the match to the seventh game, and the Blazers completed the comeback with a 217-168 win.
The final match of the day for UAB was against No. 16 Delaware State. The Blazers won the first game before Delaware State tied the game up with a win in the second. UAB would win the next three games to take the win, 4-1, and move into 11th.
Freshman Jessica Mellott was named to the All-Tournament Second Team for finishing 11th individually in the tournament.
UAB will have a week off before it returns to action in the Wildcat Invitational Feb. 6-8 in Deland, Fla.
