CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UAB women's basketball team picked up its second-straight Conference USA win after defeating Charlotte, 60-52, on Thursday night in Charlotte, N.C. The win ended the 49ers seven-game streak over the Blazers.
"That was a great team-win tonight," head coach Randy Norton said. "We had eight players score and 23 points come from the bench. Charlotte has a very good team. They had won three in a row in the conference. It is a big win for us tonight. I am really proud of our team."
UAB (9-8, 3-3 C-USA) played a balanced game as eight of the nine players that saw action scored and the Blazers finished 48.9 percent from the field, while holding Charlotte (7-11, 3-3 C-USA) to 36.5 percent on the night.
Three players finished in double figures as senior Janae Smith and junior Chelsee Black led with 12 points each. Junior Brittany Winborne recorded the third double-double of her career with a season high 10 points and brought down a team-high 10 rebounds.
"Brittany (Winborne) did a great job for us off the bench with a double-double," Norton stated. "Kayla (Anderson) could not get in the flow because she was in foul trouble all night, but that is what great teams do. People come off the bench and step up. I feel like everyone that came in, Whytney (Singleton), T'erra (Lewis) and Dy'Man (Webb) all contributed."
Winborne led a 23-point effort by the Blazers' bench. Freshman T'erra Lewis added six points and fellow freshman Whytney Singleton scored a career-high give points.
After a slow start, UAB used a 12-2 run to take a 14-11 lead over Charlotte at the 11:10 mark in the first half. The run included two 3-pointers by senior Miranda Burroughs, who finished 3-of-3 in the first half.
The 49ers tied the game up with a 3-pointer, and the teams fought back-and-forth until the Blazers used an 8-2 run that included another three from Burroughs and a 3-pointer play by Smith. UAB closed out the first half 4-of-4 from the field to take a 29-22 lead into the break.
The Blazers quickly pushed their lead double digits as junior Chelsee Black drained a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second half. Back-to-back layups by Winborne and sophomore Janeka Williams would give UAB a 38-25 lead.
Lewis went up and under two Charlotte defenders for a layup to put the Blazers up 42-27 with 13:34 to play. A four-minute scoring drought for UAB allowed the 49ers to cut the lead to six, 42-36, until Black hit her second three of the night.
Smith followed with another three to give UAB a 48-36 lead with 7:53 remaining in the game. However, Charlotte would not go easy as the 49ers fought back with a 6-0 run to cut the Blazers' lead to five, 52-47, with 1:27 to go.
Lewis made a jumper on the wing with under a minute to play to put UAB up 54-47. The 49ers sent the Blazers to the line where UAB converted 6-of-6 to secure the 60-52 win.
UAB will remain on the road as it travels up to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
